The concept for redeveloping Quartier U21 in Ludwigsburg skilfully balances preservation, renovation and new construction to maintain the character of the area while infusing it with new life. The guiding idea is a “city collage”. Inspired by the heterogeneous surroundings, various building typologies are arranged around a centrally located green oasis, forming a cohesive composition. Five typologies reflect the history: the “Oldtimer” from the time of the former birdcage factory, the existing “Youngtimer” from the 1960s, the “Loft House” from the 1990s and the future new buildings, the “Laubenganghaus” (access balcony house) and “Huckepackhaus” (piggyback house), all combine to make the design a unique, identity-generating quarter. The result is a vibrant place with a diverse range of uses. On the one hand, there are commercial spaces, offices and catering facilities, and on the other, a variety of housing options for singles, senior citizens, young couples or flat-sharing communities. The Huckepackhaus concept stacks single-family homes on top of each other, offering family-friendly living in a central urban location. The new Laubenganghaus completes the block of houses towards the railway, creating a peaceful, green oasis as a shared outdoor space.
